The result of this audit will set the foundation to your ad campaign strategy. In some cases, you may also offer the audit for free as part of the sales process/proposal.\r\n\r\n__👨 Who does this:__ The person responsible for media buying.\r\n\r\n__⚠️Prerequisites or requirements: __You will need access to your client’s or your company’s Meta Business Suite and Ad Account.\r\n\r\n[__Click here to get the most up-to-date version of this SOP__](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/124)\r\n\r\n## Review ad account structure\r\n\r\n__Why this is important:__ This is so that the account is organized. Reporting and optimizing the campaigns will be less of a challenge in the future. Organizing the ad account will also improve your handover workflow in the future.\r\n\r\n__Ideal Outcome__:\r\n\r\n- You have the best Ad Account structure in place.\r\n- The entire account follows a logical and accurate naming convention.\r\n- The Meta Ad account should ideally follow the structure below:\r\n\r\n\r\n- Ad Account — Each business or brand should have one ad account.\r\n- Campaign — Create at least one new campaign for each business objective.\r\n\r\n__Example__:\r\n\r\n- Campaign \\#1: Increase Brand Awareness\r\n- Campaign \\#2: Lead Generation\r\n- Campaign \\#3: Sales Promo\r\n- Ad Set — Each ad set serves a specific audience or interest. Example:\r\n- Ad Set \\#1: Men who are interested in Nike.\r\n- Ad Set \\#1: Women who are interested in Nike.\r\n- Ad — Each ad serves a different marketing angle or headline. Example:\r\n- Ad \\#1: A $499 Parisian handbag for $59 - Check it out.\r\n- Ad \\#2: Handmade Parisian handbag built with love <3 - Check it out.\r\n\r\n__Side Note__: For a full rundown on how to structure an ad account, follow SOP 069: How to structure your Meta Ads Account ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/069/)).\r\n\r\nIn addition, check if the entire account follows a logical naming convention. Having a solid naming convention helps you easily identify campaigns, ad sets, and ads, which will save you time in the long run. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all naming convention, but generally, a good naming convention will help you identify it in a glance:\r\n\r\n- Campaign — What is the campaign about and its objective?\r\n- Ad set — What are the target audience, device, and demographics?\r\n- Ad — What is the key messaging in this ad?\r\n\r\n__Side Note__: For a full rundown on how to apply ad naming convention, follow SOP 073: How to define a naming convention to your Meta Ads Accounts and apply it efficiently ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/073/)).\r\n\r\n## Review tracking set up\r\n\r\n__Why this is important__: Your ad account may be under or over-reporting, if the tracking pixel is not set up properly.\r\n\r\n__Ideal Outcome__:\r\n\r\n- Facebook Pixel is firing in the right pages and sending the right data.\r\n- Destination URL’s UTM parameters are set up and are tracking properly.\r\n- Domain ownership verified.\r\n- Conversion events are set up, prioritized, and triggered accurately.\r\n\r\n__Make sure the Meta Pixel is installed and firing correctly:__\r\n\r\n### 01▸ Install the [Meta Pixel Helper ](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/facebook-pixel-helper/fdgfkebogiimcoedlicjlajpkdmockpc?hl=en)Chrome plugin.\r\n\r\n### 02▸ Compile a list of URLs of the website you’re auditing:\r\n\r\n- Home page\r\n- Landing pages\r\n- Sales pages\r\n- Other relevant pages\r\n\r\n### 03▸ For each URL on the list, check if the Meta Pixel is installed and firing correctly by following the “QA the Meta Pixel” section: SOP 005: Install Meta Pixel on Your Site ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/005/)).\r\n\r\n### 04▸ Also, check if the conversion tracking is set up correctly by following the “Check if conversions are tracking properly” section of SOP 017: Set up Facebook (Meta) Conversion Tracking ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/017/)).\r\n\r\n### 05▸ Next, review the UTM parameters by compiling a list of all landing page URLs from your ads.\r\n\r\n### 06▸ To export all the landing page URLs, first, log in to [Meta Ads Manager](https://business.facebook.com/adsmanager).\r\n\r\n### 07▸ Hover your mouse to the top right panel and click \"Columns: Performance\" > \"Customize columns\".\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n### 08▸ Search for \"URL parameters\" in the search bar and tick the box. Then, click \"Apply\".\r\n\r\nYou can now view all the utm parameters for all the landing pages in the ad campaign.\r\n\r\n\r\nMake sure all URLs include the appropriate UTM parameters, for example:\r\n\r\n- utm_source=Facebook\r\n- utm_medium=ppc\r\n- utm_campaign=lead-generation\r\n\r\n### 09▸ Next, select the campaign by ticking the box, click on the arrow next to the share icon button or “Export”, and click “Customize export”.\r\n\r\n### 10▸ Name the report and select the appropriate format to export the report. It is recommended to include summary totals. Remember to click \"Export\" to proceed.\r\n\r\n### 11▸ To ensure proper export of URL parameters, check if they are being logged properly to Google Analytics by following the “Check your UTM URLs” section of SOP 006: How to Create UTM Tracking URLs ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/006/)).\r\n\r\nThis ensures your campaign performance can be accurately tracked in Google Analytics. Without UTM tracking validation, you might miss valuable data on where your traffic is coming from and how users interact with your site.\r\n\r\n### 12▸ Domain ownership verification - Make sure you have completed the domain ownership verification process by following SOP 097: Verifying ownership of your domain in Meta Business Suite ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/097/)).\r\n\r\nWhy? Meta requires verified domain ownership to help manage link editing privileges and ensure campaign attribution works correctly, especially for events using URL parameters.\r\n\r\n### 13▸ Conversion events prioritization - Please follow SOP 098: Configuring your Meta Ads conversion events ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/098/)) if it’s not set up.\r\n\r\nDue to iOS 14 privacy changes, Meta limits data tracking unless conversion events are configured and prioritized. Without this setup, your campaigns may not optimize for the desired actions on your website.\r\n\r\n## Review audience and interest targeting\r\n\r\n__Why this is important__: To identify suboptimal ad set targeting and find new audience opportunities to target.\r\n\r\n__Ideal Outcome__:\r\n\r\n- Identify audiences to keep or remove based on performance.\r\n- Identify new cold or warm audiences to add to your strategy.\r\n\r\n__Before You Begin:__\r\n\r\n- Request the customer persona deck from your marketing manager or the client for the current website.\r\n\r\n### 01▸ First, review the current audiences being targeted.\r\n\r\nAre the audiences targeting the same demographic and interests as the customer persona?\r\n\r\nIf the audience targeting doesn’t reflect the customer persona, check how it is performing (I.e. if the objective is revenue, check the return on ad spend (ROAS)), even though the audiences might not match the customer personas, they might be worth keeping, if they’re hitting your performance KPIs.\r\n\r\nIf your KPI is the ROAS, you can check it by heading to the [current account ad set](https://business.facebook.com/adsmanager/manage/adsets/edit).\r\n\r\nRefer to the column “Website Purchase ROAS”.\r\n\r\n### \r\n\r\n### 02▸ Check if the ad set audience reach is too broad or too narrow.\r\n\r\nHead to the [current account ad set](https://business.facebook.com/adsmanager/manage/adsets/edit).\r\n\r\nHover over the ad set name and click “Edit”.\r\n\r\n\r\n__Note:__ General rule of thumb for audience reach:\r\n\r\n- Cold Audience: 200,000 to 5,000,000 people potential reach.\r\n- Warm Audience: Depends on the list/pixel used to create the warm audience targeting.\r\n\r\n### 03▸ Next, review audience segmentation.\r\n\r\nCheck if the current ad set or campaign structure differentiates targeting between cold and warm audiences. (Your ad sets should not mix cold and warm audiences)\r\n\r\n- Cold audience — Target people based on interest, demographics, location, and behaviour.\r\n- Warm audience — Target people who have previously interacted with your website or brand.\r\n\r\nFor step-by-step instructions on how to create cold and warm audiences, refer to SOP 074: How to select your Meta Ads Targeting ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/074/))\r\n\r\n### 04▸ Exclude existing customers (if applicable).\r\n\r\n__Note__: You can check the audience targeting by referring to the \"Create new audience\" and \"Custom audiences\" section of the ad set setting.\r\n\r\n\r\nIf it’s a cold ad set, make sure the targeting excludes existing customers so the ad budget is not wasted on them.\r\n\r\n\r\n__Note__: Some ad sets __DO NOT__ need to exclude customers. For example, a remarketing campaign to upsell would need to include existing customers in the targeting. It’s best to first check the name of the ad campaign to understand its objective before making significant changes to the ad set targeting.\r\n\r\n## Review ad copy and creative direction\r\n\r\n__Why this is important:__ To identify suboptimal ad copy and creatives and to find new opportunities to improve on current ads.\r\n\r\n__Ideal Outcome__:\r\n\r\n- Identify ads without distinct clear calls to action\r\n- Identify redundant ads/creatives to remove.\r\n- Identify ads with mismatched landing page messaging.\r\n- Identify ads with low quality scores and action steps to improve.\r\n\r\n__CTA — Does each ad have a clear, distinct, and strong call to action?__\r\n\r\n__Example__:\r\n\r\n- Buy now and get 50% off\r\n- Limited time offer. Get your free ebook\r\n- Order a hand-made T-shirt now.\r\n- Check if each ad has a unique marketing angle.\r\n\r\ni.e each ad can be differentiated via benefit, unique selling proposition (USP), pricing, audience, etc.\r\n\r\n__Example__:\r\n\r\n- Sign up for a free ebook today.\r\n- Sign up for a limited-copy ebook today.\r\n- Get this ebook for just $5.99.\r\n\r\n__Check if the ad messaging matches the landing page. For example, if the ad asks the user to sign up for a free e-book, then the landing page should reflect the same message.__\r\n\r\n____\r\n\r\n__Check the quality ranking score for each ad. There are 5 possible values for the quality ranking score:__\r\n\r\n- Above Average\r\n- Average\r\n- Below Average (Bottom 35% of ads)\r\n- Below Average (Bottom 20% of ads)\r\n- Below Average (Bottom 10% of ads)\r\n\r\nIdeally, the quality score should be at least average. If the ad scores are below average, refer to Meta guidelines on [how to overcome a low ad quality score.](https://www.facebook.com/business/help/436113280262012?id=561906377587030)\r\n\r\n\r\n## Review overall account performance\r\n\r\n__Why this is important__: This step is to help you identify low performing ad campaigns, ad sets, or ads which you can then consolidate or optimize for better results.\r\n\r\n__Ideal Outcome:__\r\n\r\n- Identify Campaigns, Ad Sets, and Ads with the lowest performance (high CPA, low ROAS, low conversions, etc)\r\n- Create a plan to lift results.\r\n\r\n### 01▸ Review current Ad Spend distribution by sorting the campaigns by “Amount Spent” and identify the high-spending campaigns along with their return on ad spend (ROAS) or Cost per Action (CPA).\r\n\r\nUsually, you would like to see most of the budget going towards the most profitable campaigns. If you have campaigns that are not performing well but a considerable budget is being delivered, it can indicate an opportunity for improvement.\r\n\r\n__Note__: You should also perform this step at the Ad Set and Ad level (not just at the campaign level) to determine if the current budget has been optimally spent.\r\n\r\n\r\n### 02▸ Analyse at the Ad Set and Ad level. \r\n\r\nReview the current Cost per Result on Ad Sets. Which Ad Set brings you the lowest cost per conversion? Sort the Ad Sets by “Amount Spent” and determine which Ad Sets have the lowest cost per result and are making the most efficient use of the budget.\r\n\r\n\r\n### 03▸ Action steps you can take based on your findings. \r\n\r\n- __Pause or Reduce Budget__ \r\nFor campaigns, ad sets, or ads with consistently poor performance (e.g., high CPA or low ROAS).\r\n- __Reallocate Budget__ \r\nShift budget away from underperformers and invest more in those showing stronger results.\r\n- __Scale What Works__ \r\nGradually increase the budget for top-performing campaigns, ad sets, or ads to maximise results.\r\n- __Consolidate Top Performers__ \r\nCombine high-performing audiences, creatives, and budgets into a new, streamlined campaign or ad set for improved performance and easier management.\r\n- __Test and Optimise__ \r\nUse \"Split Testing (A/B testing)\" on your best-performing campaigns or ad sets to refine creative, copy, audience targeting, or placement strategies.","html":"
SOP 124: Audit a Meta Ads Account
\n
Perform an audit on your team or client’s ad account to reveal the low-hanging fruits and pave the way to a new media buying strategy.
\n
Last Updated / Reviewed: 04/10/2025
\n
Execution Time: 5-10 mins
\n
🚀 Goal: To perform an audit on your team or client’s ad account to determine opportunities to improve and issues to fix.
\n
🤞 Ideal Outcome: You will be able to determine what’s working and not working on the ad account and setting your next steps when you take over the account.
\n
🤔 Why this is important: The results of this audit will get you acquainted with the ad account history, reveal the low-hanging fruits, and pave the way to a new media buying strategy.
\n
🧐 Where this is done Inside Meta Business Suite.
\n
🗓️ When this is done: After client onboarding and when the client has granted you access to their Meta Business Suite account.
