Once you land on one of the 3 major targeting options outlined in the previous chapter, move on to the next chapter.\r\n\r\n## Defining your audience\r\n\r\n## General Rules of Thumb\r\n\r\nWhen in doubt, don’t get too granular when selecting your targeting. Meta Ads work well with loose targeting options. This is especially true if you already have been running Meta Ad campaigns for a while in that account and sending data to your Meta pixel. __Example__: If you have a hunch that your PPC customers are mostly male but have no real data to support that or are not sure about it, do not limit your campaign’s reach to males only.\r\n\r\nOn the other hand, do not get too loose with your targeting.\r\n\r\n__Example__: If you’re promoting a lipstick brand, there’s a very high chance your customer base will be pretty much women. If that is the case, do limit your campaign to women only.\r\n\r\nAvoid mixing different types of Interests, Behaviors, Custom Audiences, or Lookalike Audiences in the same Ad Set. When you do that, if your Ad Set performs/underperforms, you won’t be able to know which of the audiences are working and which ones are not.\r\n\r\n__Good example__: Lookalike 1% Purchasers - US __Bad example__: “Lookalike 1% Purchasers - US + Interest: Display Advertising + Interest: Business +Custom Audience: Visited the Checkout”\r\n\r\n__Important__: Before moving forward, make sure you have already selected the right targeting group by following the decision tree. If you haven’t already, do that now using Template 147: Facebook Ads Audience selection decision tree ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/template/147/)).\r\n\r\n## Defining Your Core Audiences\r\n\r\n### 01▸ Pick one of the following options depending on what is available to you. It’s also possible to use a combination of the below:\r\n\r\n- __Option 1__: Use existing customer avatars (Recommended)\r\n- __Option 2__: Use industry reports or competitive data (Good)\r\n- __Option 3__: Target competitors or pages with complementary services/products (not ideal, especially in the long run)\r\n\r\n## Option 1: Use customer avatars (personas)\r\n\r\nThis is to define the interests and demographics that you will use in your targeting. These personas should have been created specifically for your business and match the product, service, or offer you will be promoting on your Ads.\r\n\r\n__Example:__\r\n\r\n____\r\n\r\nOn Ads Manager, under detailed targeting, explore interests, behaviors or demographics that would match the ones with your customer avatar:\r\n\r\n\r\n__Remember__: Make sure the audience size isn’t both too broad or too narrow:\r\n\r\n\r\n__Example:__ 41M people will likely be too broad, and you should narrow it down further by demographics or layering other audiences.\r\n\r\n## Option 2: Use industry reports or competitive data.\r\n\r\nThere are a few different options you can use to gather this data:\r\n\r\n- Using Similar Web (Free)\r\n- Using Industry Reports and Market Research (Free or Paid)\r\n\r\n### 01▸ Using SimilarWeb (Free, no email required)\r\n\r\nHead over to [https://www.similarweb.com/](https://www.similarweb.com/)\r\n\r\nInsert the URL of the website you want to analyze:\r\n\r\n__Note:__ Usually that would be your brand. But if you do not have enough traffic yet, you can use a very close competitor instead as a proxy.\r\n\r\n\r\nYou will get a report that will give you further insights into the audience that visits that specific website. Depending on how popular the website is, some data might or might not be available to you.\r\n\r\n__Use these insights to help you select relevant interests, behaviors, or demographics:__\r\n\r\n____\r\n\r\n__Example__:\r\n\r\n\r\n### 02▸ Using industry reports or market research (free or paid depending on the source)\r\n\r\nIf you have access to industry reports, papers, case studies, market research, or other documents that allow you to gather insights into the type of audience your brand might be targeting, you can use those to help you select relevant interests, behaviors, or demographics. __Example:__\r\n\r\n____\r\n\r\n Use these insights to help you select relevant interests, behaviors, or demographics.\r\n\r\n## Option 3: Target competitors or pages with complementary services/products\r\n\r\nIf you do not have any of the options above or want to diversify your traffic or test new audiences, you can target your competitors or brands that offer supplementary products/services to yours or that are used by your target audience to gather information (as long as they are large enough).\r\n\r\n\r\n__Note:__ After you’ve defined your initial core audience, do not forget to always follow the next steps:\r\n\r\n- Use targeting layers\r\n- Check for audience overlap\r\n\r\n## Defining your custom audiences\r\n\r\nThe custom audience you will want to target depends largely on what it is that your ad will be promoting. This SOP contains a list of possible audiences to target. Go through each audience until you find one that makes sense for the offer, product or service that you will be promoting to your visitor.\r\n\r\nAs a rule of thumb, you’ll generally want to start by targeting people who are as close to your ad’s conversion goal as possible.\r\n\r\n__Example: __If your ad is going to push users to purchase a product from your store, you might want to target people who have been to the checkout but have not completed the transaction.\r\n\r\nIdeally, you should make sure that your custom audience has at least 1,000 people. So, if your site does not get a lot of traffic, there are times when you might need to be a little broader with your custom audiences.\r\n\r\n__Example: __If only 100 people have visited your checkout page but didn’t purchase, you might want to also add users who have viewed the sales page but didn’t purchase or any other relevant audiences until you reach at least 1,000 people.\r\n\r\n__Note__: Your ability to target certain audiences will depend on how granular your tracking setup is. For example, if you want to deliver an ad to people that have submitted a form on your website, but have not purchased from you, you will need to already be tracking both that form submission and the purchase event.\r\n\r\nIf you are not tracking your main goals yet, you will want to follow SOP 017: Set up Facebook (Meta) Conversion Tracking ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/017/)).\r\n\r\n__Site Visitors__\r\n\r\n- Visitor engagement by:\r\n\t- Any\r\n\t- Duration\r\n\t- Number of pages viewed\r\n\t- Time on website\r\n- Page Views such as:\r\n\t- Any\r\n\t- Blog views\r\n\t- Product/Sales Pages\r\n\t- Checkout\r\n\t- Payment Page\r\n\t- Signup Page\r\n\t- Pricing Page\r\n- Leads by:\r\n\t- Any\r\n\t- Different funnel stages\r\n\t- Page\r\n\t- Specific Category Page Views\r\n\t- Searches on your website\r\n- Add-to-carts by:\r\n\t- Any\r\n\t- High value\r\n\t- Category-specific\r\n- Purchasers by:\r\n\t- Any\r\n\t- High-Value Purchasers\r\n\r\n__Contact Lists__\r\n\r\n- Current customers/leads\r\n- Email activity:\r\n\t- Opened any email / a specific email\r\n\t- Clicked any email / a specific email\r\n- Customers/leads within the last X days:\r\n\t- __Examples: __0-15 days after becoming a lead; 16-30 days after becoming a lead\r\n\r\n__Engagement__\r\n\r\n- Watched a specific percentage of a specific video\r\n\r\n__Note__: Only for videos uploaded to Facebook or Instagram\r\n\r\n- Opened but didn’t submit a specific form\r\n\r\n__Note__: Only for Lead Ads\r\n\r\n- Opened and submitted a specific form\r\n\r\n__Note:__ Only for Lead Ads\r\n\r\n- Opened / Clicked on a specific Instant Experience\r\n- People who engaged with your Facebook page / Instagram Business Profile\r\n- People who visited your page / Instagram Business Profile\r\n- People who sent a message to your page / Instagram Business Profile\r\n- People who engaged in a specific way with any specific event of yours\r\n\r\n__Note__: Meta Events only\r\n\r\n__App Users__ (out of the scope of this SOP)\r\n\r\n__Offline Activity__ (out of the scope of this SOP)\r\n\r\n__Note__: Use different remarketing windows depending on what makes sense for your brand, audience, and funnel stage:\r\n\r\n__Example: __An audience for existing customers:\r\n\r\n- \r\n\t- 0-5 days post purchase: Thank you video Ad asking for a review\r\n\t- 6-30 days post purchase: Cross-sell / Upsell Ad;\r\n\t- 31-60 days post purchase: Repeat purchase Ad (depending on your product/service’s buying cycle)\r\n\r\n__Note__: After you’ve defined your initial custom audience, do not forget to always follow the next steps:\r\n\r\n- Use targeting layers\r\n- Check for audience overlap\r\n\r\n## Defining your lookalike audiences\r\n\r\nYou can create lookalikes from any of the audiences of the list above (custom audiences). Generally, you will want to start with the most valuable audiences (those would most often be your best customers) and move on to the others as you scale or when you want to diversify or test new audiences.\r\n\r\n__A good starting point would be to go from the top to bottom of this list:__\r\n\r\n- Best customers\r\n- All customers\r\n- Add to Carts\r\n- Best Leads\r\n- All Leads\r\n- Checkout / Pricing page views\r\n- > 2 Pages viewed\r\n- Page views\r\n\r\n### 01▸ Start by selecting the smallest lookalike percentage possible (1%) and only increase it if you have already found that audience to be successful and you want to try and scale it without moving to a different one.\r\n\r\n### 02▸ To create lookalike audiences, you can follow SOP 031: How to create a lookalike audience ([web version](https://members.clickminded.com/sop/031/))\r\n\r\n__Note__: After you’ve defined your initial custom audience, do not forget to always follow the next steps:\r\n\r\n- Use targeting layers\r\n- Check for audience overlap\r\n\r\n## Use targeting layers\r\n\r\n### 01▸ Make sure you have also selected the correct location and demographics:\r\n\r\n\r\n__Remember__: While location and language should be selected for most businesses, some demographics such as age and gender should only be selected if you have data that indicates that you should exclude that segment. When not sure, it is usually better to leave those wide enough.\r\n\r\n### 02▸ If you don’t want to show your ad to an audience that already took your desired action, make sure you exclude that segment from your Audience.\r\n\r\n__Example:__ If your ad’s goal is to get people to submit a form to become a lead, make sure in your target audience that you are excluding people who have already signed up.\r\n\r\n\r\nIf your audience is too wide or you are sure it would be a good idea, you can narrow it down a little bit.\r\n\r\n__Example:__ Lookalike 1% of people that have visited Airbnb and are also interested in Hotels.com.\r\n\r\n## Checking for audience overlap\r\n\r\n### 01▸ In Meta [Ads Manager](https://business.facebook.com/adsmanager), click on the \"All Tools\" found on the sidebar and click “Audiences”.\r\n\r\n\r\n### 02▸ Select the audiences that you will be analyzing and then click “Show Audience Overlap”.\r\n\r\n\r\nYou will get a report that will tell you what’s the overlap % across your audiences:\r\n\r\n__Note__: If your audience is smaller than 10,000 people, you will not be able to analyze the audience.\r\n\r\n\r\nIf you’re seeing a high overlap percentage across your Ad Sets’ Audiences, you might want to consider either consolidating the overlapping audiences into a single audience or refining your audiences in a way that reduces the overlap percentage across them.\r\n\r\n__Note__: The need to perform this step will depend on how many people per day you expect to reach with your budget when compared to the overall audience size and the % of overlap that you are experiencing.\r\n\r\n__An extreme example where overlap should be addressed:__\r\n\r\n- Audiences A and B have an 80% overlap.\r\n- Audience A has 10,000 people, and Audience B has 10,000 people as well.\r\n- With your budget, you're expected to reach 7,000 people per day on each.\r\n- In this example, the high overlap percentage will definitely have an effect on your Ad Set performance, which will make it harder to optimize your account and also lead to poor results across both Ad Sets.\r\n\r\n__An extreme example where overlap should not be a problem (although better if avoided):__\r\n\r\n- Audiences A and B have a 10% overlap.\r\n- Audience A has 1M people, and Audience B has 1M people as well.\r\n- With your budget, you're expected to reach 100 people per day on each.\r\n- In this example, it’s unlikely that the overlap will noticeably affect your account. It might not be worth it to be concerned about overlap.","html":"
SOP 074: How To Select Your Meta Ads Targeting
\n
Select a solid targeting option for your Ad, based on data that is available to you and that takes into account other audiences that you are targeting across your account.
\n
Last Updated / Reviewed: 04/10/2025
\n
Execution Time: 5 - 30 mins
\n
🚀 Goal: To select the right audience to use on your Meta Ads’ Ad Sets.
\n
🤞 Ideal Outcome: Select a solid targeting option for your ad based on the data available to you while also considering other audiences targeted across your account.
\n
🤔 Why this is important: Your Ad Set’s audience can make or break your campaign.
\n
🧐 Where this is done On Meta Ads Manager.
\n
🗓️ When this is done: Every time you are creating a new Ad Set.
\n
👨 Who does this: The person responsible for paid advertising.
\n
__⚠️Prerequisites or requirements: __You need to have a Meta Ads account. For example, if you want to deliver an ad to people that have submitted a form on your website, but have not purchased from you, you will need to already be tracking both that form submission and the purchase event.
\n
If you are not tracking your main goals yet, you will want to follow SOP 017: Set up Facebook (Meta) Conversion Tracking (web version).
\n
Site Visitors
\n
\n
Visitor engagement by:\n
\n
Any
\n
Duration
\n
Number of pages viewed
\n
Time on website
\n
\n
\n
Page Views such as:\n
\n
Any
\n
Blog views
\n
Product/Sales Pages
\n
Checkout
\n
Payment Page
\n
Signup Page
\n
Pricing Page
\n
\n
\n
Leads by:\n
\n
Any
\n
Different funnel stages
\n
Page
\n
Specific Category Page Views
\n
Searches on your website
\n
\n
\n
Add-to-carts by:\n
\n
Any
\n
High value
\n
Category-specific
\n
\n
\n
Purchasers by:\n
\n
Any
\n
High-Value Purchasers
\n
\n
\n
\n
Contact Lists
\n
\n
Current customers/leads
\n
Email activity:\n
\n
Opened any email / a specific email
\n
Clicked any email / a specific email
\n
\n
\n
Customers/leads within the last X days:\n
\n
__Examples: __0-15 days after becoming a lead; 16-30 days after becoming a lead
\n
\n
\n
\n
Engagement
\n
\n
Watched a specific percentage of a specific video
\n
\n
Note: Only for videos uploaded to Facebook or Instagram
\n
\n
Opened but didn’t submit a specific form
\n
\n
Note: Only for Lead Ads
\n
\n
Opened and submitted a specific form
\n
\n
Note: Only for Lead Ads
\n
\n
Opened / Clicked on a specific Instant Experience
\n
People who engaged with your Facebook page / Instagram Business Profile
\n
People who visited your page / Instagram Business Profile
\n
People who sent a message to your page / Instagram Business Profile
\n
People who engaged in a specific way with any specific event of yours
\n
\n
Note: Meta Events only
\n
App Users (out of the scope of this SOP)
\n
Offline Activity (out of the scope of this SOP)
\n
Note: Use different remarketing windows depending on what makes sense for your brand, audience, and funnel stage:
\n
__Example: __An audience for existing customers:
\n
\n
\n
\n
0-5 days post purchase: Thank you video Ad asking for a review
\n
6-30 days post purchase: Cross-sell / Upsell Ad;
\n
31-60 days post purchase: Repeat purchase Ad (depending on your product/service’s buying cycle)
\n
\n
\n
\n
Note: After you’ve defined your initial custom audience, do not forget to always follow the next steps:
\n
\n
Use targeting layers
\n
Check for audience overlap
\n
\n
Defining your lookalike audiences
\n
You can create lookalikes from any of the audiences of the list above (custom audiences). Generally, you will want to start with the most valuable audiences (those would most often be your best customers) and move on to the others as you scale or when you want to diversify or test new audiences.
\n
A good starting point would be to go from the top to bottom of this list:
\n
\n
Best customers
\n
All customers
\n
Add to Carts
\n
Best Leads
\n
All Leads
\n
Checkout / Pricing page views
\n
\n
\n
2 Pages viewed
\n
\n
\n
Page views
\n
\n
01▸ Start by selecting the smallest lookalike percentage possible (1%) and only increase it if you have already found that audience to be successful and you want to try and scale it without moving to a different one.
\n
02▸ To create lookalike audiences, you can follow SOP 031: How to create a lookalike audience (web version)
\n
Note: After you’ve defined your initial custom audience, do not forget to always follow the next steps:
\n
\n
Use targeting layers
\n
Check for audience overlap
\n
\n
Use targeting layers
\n
01▸ Make sure you have also selected the correct location and demographics:
\n
Remember: While location and language should be selected for most businesses, some demographics such as age and gender should only be selected if you have data that indicates that you should exclude that segment. When not sure, it is usually better to leave those wide enough.
\n
02▸ If you don’t want to show your ad to an audience that already took your desired action, make sure you exclude that segment from your Audience.
\n
Example: If your ad’s goal is to get people to submit a form to become a lead, make sure in your target audience that you are excluding people who have already signed up.
\n
If your audience is too wide or you are sure it would be a good idea, you can narrow it down a little bit.
\n
Example: Lookalike 1% of people that have visited Airbnb and are also interested in Hotels.com.
\n
Checking for audience overlap
\n
01▸ In Meta Ads Manager, click on the \"All Tools\" found on the sidebar and click “Audiences”.
\n
02▸ Select the audiences that you will be analyzing and then click “Show Audience Overlap”.
\n
You will get a report that will tell you what’s the overlap % across your audiences:
\n
Note: If your audience is smaller than 10,000 people, you will not be able to analyze the audience.
\n
If you’re seeing a high overlap percentage across your Ad Sets’ Audiences, you might want to consider either consolidating the overlapping audiences into a single audience or refining your audiences in a way that reduces the overlap percentage across them.
\n
Note: The need to perform this step will depend on how many people per day you expect to reach with your budget when compared to the overall audience size and the % of overlap that you are experiencing.
\n
An extreme example where overlap should be addressed:
\n
\n
Audiences A and B have an 80% overlap.
\n
Audience A has 10,000 people, and Audience B has 10,000 people as well.
\n
With your budget, you're expected to reach 7,000 people per day on each.
\n
In this example, the high overlap percentage will definitely have an effect on your Ad Set performance, which will make it harder to optimize your account and also lead to poor results across both Ad Sets.
\n
\n
An extreme example where overlap should not be a problem (although better if avoided):
\n
\n
Audiences A and B have a 10% overlap.
\n
Audience A has 1M people, and Audience B has 1M people as well.
\n
With your budget, you're expected to reach 100 people per day on each.
\n
In this example, it’s unlikely that the overlap will noticeably affect your account. It might not be worth it to be concerned about overlap.
\n
\n"}
